YIVO Presents an Evening of Hebrew Song

May 15, 2019

(New York, NY) – The YIVO Institute for Jewish Research is proud to present an evening devoted to the classic treasures of secular Hebrew song and to the poetry that has inspired the writing of these songs for more than a century.

The program, A Hebrew Liederabend — An Evening of Hebrew Song will take place on Tuesday, June 4 at 7:00pm at YIVO.

The illuminating program will be presented in the intimate setting of a traditional Liederabend (song evening), appropriate to this evocative experience.

The recital will feature three of the leading interpreters of this genre of music: Ilana Davidson, Raphael Frieder, and Elizabeth Shammash, together with world-renowned virtuoso pianist Yehudi Wyner. These memorable renditions of songs both familiar and forgotten convey universal humanistic themes as well sentiments of national-cultural rebirth and solidarity.

The evening will include songs by composers such as Moses Milner, Joel Engel, Joseph Achron, Mikhail Gnesin, Alexander Krein, Paul Ben-Haim, Marc Lavry, Menahem Wisenberg, Tzvi Avni, Aaron Copland, and Kurt Weill. It will also have a nostalgic array of some of the most beloved and enduring “Songs of the Land of Israel” in various artistic arrangements.

The concept and content of this Hebrew Liederabend has been devised by YIVO’s Anne E. Leibowitz Visiting Professor-in-Residence in Music Professor Neil W. Levin. Professor Levin will deliver the pre-concert lecture at 6:00pm on the development of the modern Hebrew song tradition, its literary basis, and the spirit of rejuvenation that drove its resurgence.
