This is a live, online course held twice weekly on Zoom. Enrollment will be capped at about 15 students. All course details (Zoom link, syllabus, handouts, assignments, etc.) will be posted to Canvas. Students will be granted access to the class on Canvas after registering for the class here on the YIVO website. This class will be conducted in Yiddish.

Who should take this course?
This course is for those who took an advanced intensive course in spring 2022. This includes: Intensive Advanced I&II Yiddish, Intensive Advanced III&IV Yiddish, and Intensive Advanced V&VI Yiddish. It is also appropriate for those who took Advanced Yiddish (in-person or online) in the 2022 Summer Program.

What topics will this class cover?
The purpose of this course is to continue to develop all language skills at an advanced level: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. The class will work on different grammar topics, such as perfective and imperfective verbs and various verbal structures. In addition, students will read short works and excerpts of longer ones by the writers Yehoyesh (1872-1927), Dovid Bergelson (1884-1952), Kadia Molodowsky (1894-1975) and Menukhe Ram (1916-2000).

The instructor will provide all course materials digitally throughout the class on Canvas.

Sharon Bar-Kochva works as a Yiddish teacher and a librarian in the Paris Yiddish Center, where she is also head of the pedagogical team. She has been teaching Yiddish in various levels worldwide since 2004, both in academic and non-academic frameworks. She received her PhD from Inalco University in Paris on the topic of Pseudonymes of Yiddish and Hebrew writers.
